Business solutions

Airbuild vs. Base44 for business solutions.

Simple internal tools are quick to build on either platform. For transactional, compliance-bound business software the difference is architectural: a NoSQL entity store versus relational integrity.

Base44 (a Wix company) is a batteries-included builder: auth, data, hosting and analytics without external setup. Airbuild works the same way — everything included, nothing to wire up. The difference is what the batteries are made of.

Business software has different load-bearing walls. Per Base44’s documentation (as of the date below): transaction guarantees are not clearly documented, the MongoDB-compatible document model has no SQL-style foreign keys or unique constraints, a dedicated decimal type is not documented, query and backend-function limits apply (5,000 records per request, 50 functions per project), data location is US by default — and the backend runs as Base44-managed services. Each of these is fine for a demo tool; together they are structural blockers for accounting-grade software. Airbuild’s stack is the counter-position: PostgreSQL with constraints, transactions and Decimal money in generated code, a full FastAPI application runtime — dedicated per app on the Dedicated (Power) tier, serverless-hosted on Cloud (Flex) — EU residency, and full-stack export.

The bottom line

With Airbuild you don’t have to choose a scope up front. The simple internal tool is built just as quickly — and the same project can grow into accounting-grade software later. That question is decided at the data layer: a document store without documented transaction guarantees or SQL-style constraints can’t be prompted into that role. PostgreSQL with generated transactions, constraints and Decimal money handles it by default. The difference is architectural, not gradual.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a business solution on Base44?

For a simple internal business tool (master data, forms, lists) Base44 is workable. For complex, compliance-bound business software the documented gaps — transaction guarantees not clearly documented, no SQL-style referential integrity, no documented decimal type, managed query limits — are structural, not configurable.

Can I export my app from Base44?

Base44 lets you export the source code, but not the backend: entity data, authentication and server functions keep running as Base44-managed services on its own platform, so the exported code is only half the application. With Airbuild the whole stack is exportable and can be self-hosted — the React front end, the FastAPI backend runtime and the PostgreSQL schema together.

Why does the database matter so much for business software?

The database matters for business software because that is where correctness lives: transactions keep a booking atomic, foreign keys keep references valid, NUMERIC keeps money exact to the cent, and sequences and constraints keep document numbers unique. Without those guarantees every one of them has to be rebuilt in application code, and then verified by hand on every change.
